Key Takeaways

Britain Opens the Door 390 Days Early

The U.K. has opened its gate to fully regulated crypto firms more than a year before the new regime actually takes effect. From Sept. 30, businesses can ask the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) for permission to operate under rules that won’t come into force until Oct. 25, 2027.

Here’s the interesting part. An existing firm that applies on time can continue providing crypto services and taking new customers while its application remains undecided, even after the regime begins.

The FCA called the opening a “landmark moment” and says crypto firms will, “for the first time,” be brought into full FCA regulation. That moves the regulator beyond its current crypto remit into a broader framework covering consumer protection, safeguarding, market integrity, and financial resilience.

A Deadline Before the Deadline

The calendar is the part firms can’t ignore. Businesses intending to remain in the U.K. should submit applications by Feb. 28, 2027, nearly eight months before the Oct. 25 start date. The FCA says it expects to determine applications filed during that window before the regime begins.

However, there’s a safety valve. Existing crypto firms that applied during the window can continue offering cryptoasset services, including taking on new business, if the FCA hasn’t reached a decision by Oct. 25.

That doesn’t make admission a formality. “Authorization is not automatic,” the regulator said on Wednesday. Applicants must satisfy standards covering consumer protection, safeguarding customer assets, market integrity, and financial resilience. Those that fall short “will not be authorized to operate in the UK market.”

The Gate Opens, but Not for Everyone

Dominic Cashman, the FCA’s director of authorization, put the shift plainly:

“The U.K.’s new crypto regime will give consumers greater protections and firms a clear framework to operate in. Firms can now apply for authorization and start preparing for regulation.”

The framework has been months in the making. In June 2026, the FCA published its final crypto rules and guidance, setting the stage for Wednesday’s opening of the authorization process. Britain’s crypto market now occupies a curious middle ground. The application gate is open, the full rulebook is waiting in the wings, and firms have months to prove they belong on the other side.
